He was born in Dobbs Ferry, NY, the second of three sons to Walter E. and Janie Fee Doerfler. Graduating from Roosevelt High School, he then received his certificate in A & E Mechanics from Stewart Tech in New York City, securing his first mechanic's job the day after Pearl Harbor.

In 1959 they bought 65-year-old Robinwood Inn in the White Mountains of Jackson, NH, becoming innkeepers to skiiers in the winter and horseback riders in the summer.
They retired in 1979 and moved to Monmouth to be near to their daughter and grandchildren.
