Independence - Army veteran and businessman, Walter N. White, age 83, died Monday in his home in Independence, Oregon from Alzheimer's. He is the oldest son of Albert and Amy White, born March 29, 1930 in Lexington, Nebraska. He had 6 brothers and two sisters, and together they survived the Great Depression. Walt's father was a well driller, and owned an auto repair business on Franklin Boulevard in Eugene, Oregon. All the boys learned their work ethics working in their father's business when they were younger. Like his father and brothers, Walter was a Cessna pilot since he was a young boy.
Long-time resident of Eugene, Walter also lived in California and Alaska. He is an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict in the 50's. He was transferred to Alaska in the last part of his service, and left the Army with an honorable discharge. He graduated in 1959 from the U of O as a geologist. He worked for the Corps of Engineers for Los Angeles, California, and later owned his own businesses, White Water Well Drilling and B.J. Well Drilling. He was a member of the Order of Eagles.
Walt was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers. He is survived by his wife, Madrene, four children and six step-children, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Viewing will be Monday, September 23, starting at 9:30 am, followed by a funeral service at 11:30 am, both at Farnstrom Mortuary, 410 Monmouth Street, Independence, OR. Interment will be at Lane Memorial Gardens in Eugene, OR. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Alzheimer's research (alz.org).
