Virgil L. Loken
December 26, 1922 - June 8, 2014
Virgil L. Loken of Monmouth, OR (formerly of University Place, WA), passed away at the age of 91 in Dallas, OR. Virgil was born in Yakima, WA, to Olaf William (Bill) Loken and Helen Ida (Orlowski) Loken.
Virgil graduated from Davis High School in Yakima, WA in 1941. With the start of World War II, he began Naval training at Catalina Island, in California. He served aboard five Merchant Marine ships overseas. Virgil attended Coast Guard Officers' School in Alameda, CA, and graduated as an Ensign. After that, he served aboard the Sharon Victory as Third Mate Deck Officer until the end of the war. By war's end, he left Okinawa, Japan, for Shanghai, China. He achieved the rank of Coast Guard Lieutenant, Junior Grade.
On his return to civilian life in 1946, Virgil purchased and operated the Tops Caf in Seattle, during which time he met Blanche A. LeVitre. They were married in June of 1948 and had two daughters.
Virgil worked for General Motors AC Spark Plug Division for 10 years as a Western Washington Territory Manager. The next twenty-two years were in Real Estate. During that time he was a partner with University Realty, then owner of Royal Realty and Loken Construction, building houses and duplexes. He retired in 1978.
Virgil was an avid golfer and fisherman. His gregarious nature made him many friends and he joined several benevolent organizations. He was a Life Member of the Tacoma Elks Lodge #174; member of the American Merchant Marine Veterans, Seattle; member of the American Legion; board member of Sons of Norway; and member of the Harmony Lodge. He and Blanche were active in several RV groups and were members of Mt. Cross Lutheran Church.
Virgil is survived by his daughters Lynne Lindsay (Kenneth) of Monmouth, OR, and Sharon Armenta (Gilbert) of Lacey, WA; five grandchildren, Lisa (Lindsay) Welsh (Dan), Heather (Lindsay) Flammang (DJ), Lance Lindsay (fianc Amy Obraske), Derek (Karina) Daily and Casey Daily; three great grandchildren and one on the way; brother William (Bill) Loken of Issaquah, WA; sister in-law Yvonne (LeVitre) Reed of Enumclaw, WA; nine nieces and three nephews. Virgil was preceded in death by his wife, Blanche, in January, 2006; his brother LaVere Loken of Gig Harbor, WA; sister Valene Ormiston of Yakima, WA and one nephew.
He will be cremated and placed to rest with Blanche at the Navy Memorial Wall at Mountain View Cemetery, Lakewood, WA. In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to the charity of your choice.
