Thomas “Tom” Arthur Emerson passed peacefully November 24, 2018 at the age of 72. Born to parents William “Bill” Archibald and Jane Louise (Randall) Emerson on November 4, 1946 in San Diego, CA, he grew up in Ocean Beach, the 7th of 12 children. His entrepreneurial and mechanical interests were evident at a young age: at 12 years old, he covered a bustling news stand outside a busy manufacturing plant, and at 15 he secretly owned two cars, parking both up the block from his parents' house. In 1963, he moved to Caledonia, NY where he worked at his uncle's printing company. He returned to San Diego in 1967, continuing his career in printing, and in 1972, moved his young family to Keizer, OR, working for Knapp Printing Company as a journeyman press operator. In the following years he made a career change to sales and service for prominent car dealerships in Salem and Lebanon, ultimately opening his own shop, Main Street Automotive in Sweet Home, OR.Tom had a quick wit, humble nature, and was the funny bone of his family, always putting a smile on your face. He had a way with people. He had a way with plants. A man who kept his Christmas tree up until Valentine's Day. A lover of baseball, a star pitcher in his youth, coaching his sons, and starting girls softball for Keizer Little League. Always in his Hawaiian shirt and flip flops. A music aficionado, teaching his children how to play the piano and to appreciate the power of music. In recent years, he continued to enjoy his love of gardening, his beloved pets, and his growing crop of grandkids, and resided in Independence, OR. He will be sorely missed by people he gave so much to, effortlessly, by being his sweet self.Tom is survived by his wife Betty (Smith) Emerson, and their son Steven; his first wife Shonnie (Scholder) Emerson, and their children, Jeremy, Mark, Joshua, Matthew, and Natalie; grandchildren Michael, Garret, Alex, Elie, Nick, Lana, Jesse, Lily, Delaney, Cameron, Adriann, Carson, Cameron, Hannah, and Zoe; great-grandchildren Aleczander, Josiah, Roman, and expecting another April 2019; siblings Ellen, Amy, Anne, Mary, Archie, Julia, Martha, and Patsy; and many nieces and nephews.He is preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Jane Emerson; brothers John, Jeremy, and Mark; and grandsons Christopher and Christian.A Celebraton of Life is scheduled for January 2019 for family and friends. Memorial donations in memory of Tom can be made to Willamette Humane Society, 4246 Turner Rd SE, Salem, OR 97317.Farnstrom Mortuary is caring for the family.
