Simon Harland Peter Schulz
INDEPENDENCE - Simon Schulz 34, a fun loving, jokester of a young man, died June 12, 2015, at his home in Independence, OR. He is survived by his father Keith M. Schulz of Kalama Washington, his mother Theresa (Teri) Boyd (Arnold) and her partner Heather Blodgett of Independence. Simon had four brothers, Keith Schulz of Phoenix, Arizona, Joseph Potter of Independence, Larry Schulz of Port Hueneme, California and John Schulz of Elko, Nevada. He had one sister, Amanda Frost and her partner Scott Seitz, of Keizer, OR. Simon had several Nieces and Nephews, Cousins, Aunts and Uncles.
Simon was born June 15th, 1980 (Father's Day) in Chula Vista, CA. He spent the first four years of his life in San Diego County before moving to Dallas, OR. Simon attended Dallas Schools, Independence Schools and Poyama School for children with disabilities. He graduated in 1998 from Dallas High School. While in high school Simon was a member of FFA which he was very proud of. He was awarded the highest award at the Polk County Fair for his FFA garden produce his senior year.
Simon entered services with Partnerships In Community Living just prior to turning 18. He lived in various settings in Dallas, Monmouth and Independence. Simon worked very hard at gaining independent living skills. He earned moving into his own place with minimal staffing where he resided until his death. The family wishes to extend our gratitude for the self determined services that PCL provided Simon.
Simon was big on Holidays. He always decorated a tree in his home and often went to the family home for the decorating party. If there was some Holiday, Simon always went to be with the family. Simon collected blue glass and accumulated quite a collection. Simon loved Christmas, his girlfriend of several years, Robin, his cat Big, the guinea pig Jody, camping, crabbing, floating down rivers, setting off fireworks, doing Tie Dye, garage sales and was a self appointed King Of The BBQ. Simon participated in Special Olympics of Polk County and SPARC, a self advocacy group coordinated through PCL. Simon attended two out of state conferences on self advocacy; one in Washington DC, the other in Hawaii. He got his first tattoo in Hawaii, of a Hula Girl.
Simon loved deeply and his dream was to marry Robin, owning his own home and becoming independent enough that he could leave services.
A BBQ Tie Dye Celebration of Life will be held at the Mothers' home on 7th St in Independence, July 18th, 2015 at 4pm and ending with a firework display after dark. Follow the balloons and you will see the tie dye sign. Please join us in celebrating a very special young man
