Ruth Helen Hoirup

February 8, 1914 — November 11, 2007

Ruth Helen Hoirup February 8, 1914 - November 11, 2007 Ruth Helen Hoirup of Salem passed peacefully into her Father's arms on November 12, 2007, surrounded by her family. She was 93 years of age. Ruth was born in Monango, N.D. in 1914, to Simon and Rosina Vix, who immigrated from Russia. She was the second youngest out of five brothers and two sisters. At a young age, she learned to knit, contributing to the family's clothing. She graduated high school, and moved on to college. With a teaching degree in hand, she taught five grades in a one room schoolhouse in Bismarck, N.D., where she later met Bill Hoirup. They were married in 1937. The couple followed Ruth's sister to Yakima, Washington, where they soon moved to Auburn and settled in Salem to raise their two daughters. Ruth worked at the T.B. Hospital, arriving daily on the handlebars of Bill's bicycle. She later worked at the Fairview Hospital as a nurse, and helped to open the dental clinic, working as a dental assistant. Her final job before retiring, at the age of 71, was at Van's Outdoor Store, where she enjoyed the "people connection." Ruth enjoyed many hobbies, mainly centered around her family. In her early years, she sang in the church choir. She had a beautiful singing voice and used it often, mainly singing hymns. Often times, you could find her on trial rides and various game shows her husband, Bill, participated in, as well as many family members. She was a 4-H leader for many years, teaching knitting, and enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. One of her most favorite pastimes was enjoying the view of the city and mountains from their home on "Hoot Hill." Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Judith and Cebrino Fuerte; grandchildren, LeAnn Piper, Conan Fuerte, and Renee Peace; and three great-grandchildren. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; husband of nearly 70 years, Bill Hoirup; and by her daughter, Sheranne Hoirup Graham. A Celebration of Life will be held at 10 a.m. on November 17 at Monmouth Christian Church, 959 Church St., Monmouth. In leiu of flowers, a contribution may be made to the Willamette Humane Society, on Turner Road S.
