Reinhold Leo Horst
May 31, 1930 - October 4, 2014
Reinhold Leo Horst, 84, resident of Monmouth, passed away on October 4, 2014. He was born May 31, 1930 in Elgin, North Dakota, to Leopold and Maria Horst, the 4th of 5 children. He had 2 brothers and 2 sisters.
After graduating from Elgin High School, Reinhold married Marjorie Hafner on September 19, 1954 in Elgin, North Dakota. They had two children. He worked as a wheat, sunflower and safflower farmer around Elgin, until retirement in 1990.
He loved to socialize with anyone he met, and conversations would inevitably return to farming. He owned and operated 1,100 acres in North Dakota and farmed for over 40 years, not counting the time he spent working on the family farm as a child.
Reiny enjoyed his grandchildren, attending their sports and school activities, and instilled in them a strong work ethic. He took flying lessons and had aspirations of one day obtaining a small aircraft pilots license. Reiny built several of his homes himself, taking lessons from his own father, as well as crafting numerous cabinets and fine furniture, which have become family treasured keepsakes which will be passed down for generations. Family and friends all say they can't remember a time when Reiny didn't have a smile on his face. He was a member of Salem First Baptist Church in Salem, OR.
Reinhold is preceded in death by parents and four siblings. He is survived by his wife Marjorie Horst of Monmouth, OR; son Brad Horst of Othello, daughter WA, Melissa (Wayne) Taber of Dallas, OR and five grandchildren.
Viewing will be Friday, October 10, 9:30 am - 11 am at Farnstrom Mortuary, 410 Monmouth Street, Independence, followed by a memorial service at 2 pm at Salem First Baptist Church. Private burial will be at Smith Cemetery.
