Peggy I. Porter
November 4, 1936 - April 24, 2013
Monmouth - Peggy Ilene Simons Porter, a long-time resident of Monmouth, died at home on April 24, 2013 after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in 1936 in Denver, Colorado, Peggy is the daughter of Don and Daisy Simons and is survived by sister Nancy Simons Joslin; children Cheryl Porter, Rob Porter and wife Dannielle Yates and Connie Porter Long and husband George Long; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, all of whom brought great joy to her life.
In the 1950s, Peggy moved with her family onto a nine-acre farm outside Dallas, Oregon. She graduated from Dallas High and married Bob Porter at age 18. Bob and Peggy celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary before his death at age 72.
Peggy was a homemaker. After her three kids went to school, she worked as a substitute cook and then head cook at the Independence Elementary School. As a member of the Monmouth Gardening Club and Saint Patrick Catholic Church, she is known and loved by many in the community.
Making home-cooked meals, sewing clothes, crocheting afghans, playing the accordion and organ, being a Cub Scout den mother, canning fruits and vegetables from the garden, reading romance novels and enjoying time with family and friends were favorite activities.
Peggy leaves a legacy that includes a pantry of home-canned fruits and vegetables, violets that bloom throughout the year and a close-knit family. Perhaps Marilyn Knowles Wilke says it best, "Homemakers are hard workers, their jobs are usually 24/7; their reward is not here on earth, they are stored above in heaven."
Viewing will be held Friday, May 3, from 12 pm to 5 pm at Farnstrom Mortuary. Her funeral will be held at Saint Patrick Catholic Church in Independence on Saturday, May 4 at 11 a.m. followed by a celebration of Peggy's life at the church. Her internment will be private. Farnstrom Mortuary has been entrusted with arrangements. Memories and condolences at FarnstromMortuary.com.
