Norman LeRoy Prouty, 72, passed away October 13, 2013 at his home in Buena Vista, Oregon, after a long struggle with Alzheimer/Dementia.
He was born in Midvale, Idaho on December 16th, 1940 to Kenneth and Kate (Gleim) Prouty. Norman was the fourteenth of sixteen children. His growing up years were spent in the Midvale-Cambridge area of Idaho. He enjoyed good memories of that time, growing up among the rough land of the Snake River and the love of family with his 5 sisters and 9 brothers.
Norman entered the U.S. Navy on July 29, 1959 and served as an engineman on numerous U.S. Navy vessels; USS Nereus A517; USS Montrose: USS Hunterdon County LST838; USS Chowanoc ATF100; and the USS Monticello LSD35.
Norman met and married the love of his life, Donna Wallace in Independence on April 9th, 1966 and left to live in San Francisco, CA. After arriving in San Francisco, he left shortly after to serve the first of two tours in Vietnam. He earned various medals and ribbons during his military service. Norman retired in Pensacola, Fla. after 22 years of military service and returned to Buena Vista area where Donna's family continued to reside. In Buena Vista he was active with Polk County Fire District#1, serving as the battalion chief of the Buena Vista fire station for 5 years. He attended Linn-Benton Community College, achieving his Associate Degree in water / wastewater treatment. After college Norman went to work for the City of Stanfield, OR and then to the City of Albany, for 15 years until his retirement in 1998.
Norman was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife Donna, son, Charles and wife Christy and daughter Pamela and husband Rigo. Norman has 4 grandchildren (Amber, Andrew, Amy and Sara). Brothers: Warren, Bill, Alton, Galen, Edgar, Kay and Frank. Sisters: Kathryn, Lillian and Marie. Predeceasing him are brothers: Chuck, Allen, Ralph, Sisters: Mary and Dorothy.
Viewing will be Thursday, October 17, 1 pm at the Buena Vista Community Church, 11355 Church Street, Buena Vista, with the service commencing at 1:30 pm.
