Mildred "Joyce" Smith Zowie

Mildred “Joyce” Smith Zowie, resident of Dallas, Oregon passed away on April 27 at the age of 75.  She was born October 17, 1942 to Marshall and Alice Smith in Paris, Texas.

Joyce graduated from Gardena High School in California.  She married Gerald Otis Zowie on August 23, 1969 in Torrance, CA.  She went to college later in life, after all but one of her children were grown.  She earned an associate's degree at the age of 38!  This was a great source of pride for her and her family.  She worked at Fairview until her retirement, and was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Dallas, OR.  A few of the activities that she enjoyed include reading, traveling, cross stitching, crochet, sewing, knitting, Victorian tea parties with her girls, gardening & designing landscapes.

Joyce’s passion was her children and family.  You could always count on her to take a genuine interest in what was going on in your life.  She made a difference by the way she made people feel when they were around her.  Her biggest priority was keeping her family together and ensuring their success.

Joyce is survived by her husband of 50 years, Gerald "Jerry" Zowie of Dallas, Oregon; son David (Tena) Gussman of Monmouth; son Wayne Gussman of Monmouth; daughter Alicia (Marc) Smiley of Dallas, Oregon; son Robert (Michelle) Zowie of Salem; and grandchildren Justin (Ramona) Gussman of Portland; Alexander (Alisha) Brink-Zowie of Monmouth; Daniel (Hayley) Zowie of Salem; Kaytlyn Zowie of Salem; and Bryan Zowie of Salem.  She is preceded in death by her son, Morgan Keith. A public Celebration of Life is being planned.  Donations may be made to honor Joyce’s life to the American Diabetes Association at www.diabetes.org .   Farnstrom Mortuary is handling arrangements.
