Michael John Fessler
October 28, 1959 - June 4, 2018
Michael was born October 28, 1959 in Corvallis, Oregon to James and Laura (Schmitz) Fessler, the second of four children. He died June 4, 2018, suddenly and unexpectedly of natural causes.
He attended elementary school in Philomath and high school at Dallas High and Central High Schools. In his last year of high school, his Special Ed teacher, Duane Riddell arranged for a temporary job as a groundskeeper at Central High School. This part time position grew into a thirty-plus year career at Central as a custodian. He retired in 2011.
Mike was athletic and Special Olympics was a huge part of his life. He was active in bowling, basketball, field events, dancing and most of all, weightlifting. He was chosen to participate in the World Games in Durham, North Carolina in 1999, and again a few years later. He was looking forward to a field event in Newberg this month. His awards are too numerous to display. He was also a regular at Monmouth Fitness Center and enjoyed coast trips and cruises.
As a result of his friendly personality and long association at Central High, he became friends with scores of people and was his mom’s right-hand helper and driver after his father’s death eleven months ago.
He leaves his mom Laura Fessler, brothers Don and Mark, and sister Ann (Bruce) Wall, as well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Mike was a generous, funny and all-around good person, and we know that God is enjoying him just as much as so many people he left behind did here on Earth.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 12 at 11 am at St. Philip Catholic Church in Dallas, OR. Contributions may be made to the Special Olympics or the charity of your choice. Farnstrom Mortuary is handling services.
