Former Corvallis resident Mary Fern Swan passed away Aug. 4, 2013, at Jefferson Manor in Dallas at the age of 87.
Mary Fern was born Dec. 27, 1925, in Varina, Iowa, to Rolla and Sylvia Knights. She was one of 11 siblings.
Fern, as she was known to friends and family, moved from Iowa to Oregon as a young woman, and worked as a telephone operator in Corvallis for 32 years. In 1952, she married Rolland Swan. After living in Corvallis for more than 30 years, Fern and Rod moved to a farm outside the city. They hosted many great family reunions on the property. Fern enjoyed baking, flowers, gardening, and canning fruits and vegetables from a large garden.
She and Rod also spent time fishing and relaxing at their summer cabin, and enjoyed their three Basset hounds.
Fern was preceded in death by her husband and all but one of her siblings. Her youngest brother, Neal Knights of Minnesota, survives. She also had many nieces and nephews who remember her fondly.
