Marylou Matteo, of Independence passed away Jan. 11, 2019. She was 82
She was born in Waterbury, Connecticut and graduated from Naugatuck high school class of 1954. She attended Boston University. She worked for Connecticut Light & Power before marrying Joe Matteo on September 5, 1959 and starting a family. She and Joe were married 50 years.
Marylou and her family moved to Oregon in 1966 from New Jersey, settling in Bridgeport on a 44-acre farm. They raised sheep, goats and chickens. They later moved to Independence where they raised sheep, cows, rabbits, and chickens. She also operated a nursery on the farm. In 1985 she opened Independence Nursery and Water Gardens. She operated the nursery until 2004 at which time she retired.
Marylou enjoyed Koi fish ponds, working in the nursery and growing plants. She also enjoyed talking to people, making latchet hook rugs, watching Animal Planet and spending time with her cats.
Marylou was an active and longtime member of the Ash Creek Water Control Board. She served as a director for many years and chairman of the board for a few years.
Survivors include her; daughter, Mary (Bob) Gardner of Camarillo, Calif.; sons, Joe (Nin) Matteo of Beavercreek and Ed (April) Matteo of Independence; eight granddaughters; and seven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers John (Janelle) Phillips of Florence, Alabama and Bill (Helen) Phillips of Naugatuck, Connecticut. Marylou was preceded in death by her husband Joseph F Matteo (Joe).
A celebration of life ceremony will be held Friday, January 25 at 1:00 pm at the Farnstrom Mortuary in Independence. Memories and condolences may be shared at FarnstromMortuary.com.
