Obituary, Dr. Margaret "Peggy" Louise Hiatt 7/17/1922-8/24/2008 Dr. Margaret "Peggy" Louise Hiatt passed away at her home in Monmouth, on August 24, 2008. Peggy was a long time member of the Monmouth community, and served as a faculty member at Oregon College of Education, now Western Oregon University, from September 1949 until June of 1983. Earning her teaching certificate in 1943 from Marylhurst College in Portland, Peggy began a life time of service to the educational community in Oregon. She earned her B.A. in 1947 at Western Washington University in Bellingham; her M.A. in 1948 from Teachers College, Columbia University and her Ed.D. from Northern Colorado University in 1956. Peggy's first assignment at OCE was in the Campus Elementary School, where she taught intermediate age youngsters. Soon she moved across the courtyard and joined the instructional faculty in the "Education Department," where she remained until her retirement. Throughout her lifetime, Peggy actively contributed to all aspects of the college community, from being a long-time patron of the Smith Fine Arts Series to being an always contributing member of Boards, committees, planning teams, State and local education organizations: She served as a consultant to school districts, developed materials on Higher Levels of Thinking Skills, served as an active member and officer at the National, State and local levels for both the Association of Teacher Educator and the Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development. But, she didn't just teach.she traveled everywhere. Her intense curiosity about other people and places kept her always just going or just back from somewhere else in the state, or world. Her expertise in photography allowed her the opportunity to share her travels with many individuals and groups in the community. She also served the community by being on committees and boards. The Monmouth Senior Center benefited from her interests and expertise in many ways as did other community groups. But mostly, she loved children and she was endlessly generous with both time and money in supporting battles against world and local hunger. She paid for goats to go to families in Napal, and Native American children to go to college in Arizona. A very special lady, as her family and those of us who knew her were aware. Peggy has established the Hiatt Scholarship for students intending to become elementary education teachers at Western Oregon University. If you wish to honor her memory, please consider remembering her by contributing to this scholarship fund. Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Arrangements Entrusted to Farnstrom Mortuary, Independence
