Lucy Elizabeth Wallace went home to be with the Lord Saturday, August 28, 2010, with her daughters by her side.
Lucy was born March 18, 1922, in Scott City, Kansas. She moved to Oregon as a young teenager. She graduated from Independence High School, had attended college in Tennessee at the Bible Training School, now known as Lee University. She was a licensed teacher in Kansas and taught in a one-room school house before her marriage to J. Lee Wallace in 1950, becoming a step-mom to Delores and Charles. Lucy and Lee moved to Independence, Oregon in 1952 with their infant daughter, Elizabeth (Becky). Over the next eight years three more daughters were born.
Lucy was not only a pioneer member of the Church of God in Independence, but along with her mother and several siblings were instrumental in its formation and building of the structures that for years marked its location at 7th and E Streets. She was faithful in service and support until surgery and a stroke 10 years ago forced her to move to Salem with her daughter.
Lucy loved spending time with family, always excited about the holidays and family reunions. She loved to play games and took delight at beating her children and grandchildren in rummy. She read the Bible through every year. Her favorite past times were watching her infamous collection of Gaither Homecoming videos and working word puzzles.
Lucy was a warm and caring person who was loved by all who knew her. She will be remembered by her family for her unconditional love and prayers, warm hugs, and gentle spirit.
Lucy was preceded in death by her husband, J. Lee Wallace, her parents, and seven siblings.
She is survived by one brother, William (Dorothy) Turner of Kansas, her four daughters, Becky (Kerry) Murphy of Jefferson, Debbie (Fred) Inkelaar of Salem, Christine (Steve) Stewart of Independence, Glenda Loftis of Eugene, her step-daughter Delores Lee of Dallas and step-son Charles (Magdalena) Wallace of Monmouth, and many grandchildren, step-grandchildren, and step-great grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held Thursday, September 2, at 6 pm at Cornerstone Church. A private cremationwas held at Farnstrom Cremation Center, with Farnstrom Mortuary in care of arrangements.
