Linette Leone Alapa Hunter
Linette Leone Alapa Hunter, Age 77 of Monmouth, Oregon, passed away peacefully on the evening of Monday August 7, 2017. She was a woman of God who loved her family and friends and always served in her church and community. She was a dedicated genealogist, a family reunion enthusiast and the matriarch of our big Polynesian family. She was born in Kahuku, Hawaii on July 4, 1940, to Clarence Alapa & Vendella Su'apa'ia and grew up in Laie, Hawaii. She lived a life dedicated to education beginning with her graduation from Kamehameha High School in 1958, then earning an AA degree from Church College of Hawaii in 1960. She went to Los Angeles Pacific College (now called Azusa Pacific University) and earned her BA in 1962. After earning her Bachelor degree, she received a contract from the American Samoa Government to teach at Samoana High School in 1963, then she became a Vice Principal at a couple of elementary schools and then Principal of Pago Pago Elementary School, meanwhile earning her MA and becoming the Director of Library Services for the American Samoa Government, ultimately earning her Doctorate of Education from BYU-Provo in 1985. She returned to American Samoa to become the Vice President of the American Samoa Community College until 1989. She spent the last ten years of her career at University of Hawaii-Hilo as the Assistant Director for the Napua No'eau Program working with gifted & talented Native Hawaiian students. Her charisma and love for education and culture has impacted the lives of many all over the Pacific.
Married in 1964 to Lagitila Fanene (deceased 1968) and then in 1971 to Samuel Hunter (deceased 2012). She is honored and beloved by her 6 children: Sweet Crichton, Lianne Fanene, Liora Fanene, Solomona Tapasa (Joanna), Kimo Hunter (Rebekah), Kamuela Hunter (Lucie). Also her siblings are: Alicia Gable, Harvey Alapa (Dardy), Clifton Alapa (Brenda), Mokihana Rivera (Gerard), Lisa Leianna Oura (deceased), Doreen Ramseyer (Richard), 14 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Chapel located at 783 Church Street West, Monmouth, Oregon 97361 on Tuesday September 5th 2017. Services begin at 10:00 am.
