Lewyn Frank Cutten Jr., 81, of Dallas died Feb. 22 in Salem.
He was born in Los Angeles to Lewyn and Mildred Cutten. He grew up in the Los Angeles in a family with his four brothers and three sisters. He played a lot of baseball. He was a messenger and a spotter for his neighborhood unit of civil defense during WW II. He graduated from Garfield High School in 1948. He served his country in The United States Marine Corp for Twenty-one years. His service included one tour in Korea and two tours in Vietnam. During his first tour in Vietnam, he received a war time Officers commission. He achieved the rank of Captain. He retired on May 31, 1970. He married Marjorie Jean Scutt on October 6, 1956 in Selah Washington. Together with their three children, Alan, Lori, and Butch, they roamed the country from North Carolina to California. The family crossed the United States eight times coast to coast. After his retirement he attended Central Washington University. He graduated with honors with a degree in Geology and a minor in Physics (He thought it would be fun). He was always gifted with a sharp mind and an interest in all Mathematics and Astronomy. He was always active in church. He was very proud of the dozen of more, "Walk to Emmaus", retreats that he participated in. He served The Lord in many capacities in many communities. His devotion and commitment, did, has, and will serve as inspiration to those who have known him. He joined Kiwanis while he and his wife lived in Brewster, Washington. He had many roles including Distinguished Lieutenant Governor in 2003-2004. He later would be a member in the Yakima, The Dalles, and Dallas and South Salem, chapters. He and Marge moved back to the Dallas area in 2007. He enjoyed his family, golfing, camping, and fishing. Many will remember him as the patient man who escorted his loving wife everywhere. Survivors include his wife, Marjorie; children, Alan, Lori, and Lewyn (Frank); brother, Franklin D. (Bumper); sister Linda; five grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; 17 nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Open casket visitation will be 2:00pm to 5:00pm Tuesday, February 28th at Farnstrom Mortuary. Graveside service with full military honors will be 2:00pm Wednesday, Febraury 29th at Fir Crest Cemetery in Monmouth.
