Independence - Lela Marguerite Nixon Whitehead passed away on December 12, 2013 at the age of 102. She was born in Carthage, Missouri on September 12, 1911 to John and Carrie Nixon . Lela was born into a family of nine children: seven boys and two girls, all of whom have preceded her in death.
Lela was married to Louie Evans and had two children, Mary Francis and Bobby Lee Evans. Bobby passed away in 2001. Lela and Louie divorced when the children were very young, and the children went to live with Louie's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Moorehouser in Carthage, MO. Years later, Lela married Charles Whitehead, and moved to Monmouth, Oregon.
Lela is survived by daughter-in-law Doris Evans of Carthage, MO; daughter Mary Francis Neely of Monmouth, OR; sister-in-law Leola Nixon of Carthage, MO; and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, 34 great-great-grandchildren and three great-great-great-granddaughters.
A viewing will be held Saturday, December 21, 2 pm at Farnstrom Mortuary, with a graveside service following at 3 pm at Fir Crest Cemetery in Monmouth, weather permitting. Please share your memories and condolences at FarnstromMortuary.com.
