Kenneth George Hoyt
March 11, 1924 - March 30, 2010

Ken was born in Camas, Washington to George and Evelyn Hoyt. His father passed away when Ken was only 3 years old, and he lived with his mother, stepfather James "Scotty" Hall, and sister in Vancouver until he was 16. At that time the family moved to Heppner, Oregon where they opened an ice cream parlor. Ken worked at the soda fountain while attending high school until he joined the Navy in 1943. He served in the Admiralty Islands near New Guinea during World War II. Ken was honorably discharged in 1946 and returned to Heppner, where he married the love of his life, Betty Marie Coxen.

Ken and Betty moved to Vanport, where they lost everything they owned in the Vanport flood of 1947. They then moved to Portland, where Ken attended Multnomah College to become a service technician in the air conditioning and refrigeration industry. He worked at Frigidaire and Sunset Electric in Beaverton before moving to Independence, where he and Betty bought and managed Independence Electric, and later, Central Service in Monmouth, Oregon.

While Ken enjoyed his job, he also loved to travel. He and Betty traveled to Europe, Australia, and took many driving trips around the U.S. Ken also enjoyed golf and spending time with friends. He was a regular fixture at the Monmouth Burgerville, where a loyal group of men met every most morning for coffee to discuss politics and whatever else happened to be on the agenda. Many problems of the world were no doubt solved during these meetings.

Ken's wife, Betty, passed away on April 6, 2009. While it was difficult for Ken to adjust to life alone after 63 years of marriage, he moved on to a new life at Emerald Pointe in Keizer, Oregon, where he passed away peacefully on March 30, 2010. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Emerald Pointe, as well as Senior Helpers and Willamette Valley Hospice for their caring concern toward the end of Ken's life.

Ken is survived by his sister, Betty Richards of Beaverton; son Stephen and wife Carol of Malibu, CA; daughter Chris Rhines and husband Robert of Salem; son David and wife Tammy of Vancouver, grandsons Ryan (Hungary) and Dylan (Malibu); granddaughters Megan (Vancouver) and Emma (Malibu); and great-granddaughter Brigitta (Hungary). A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 10, 2010 at Pringle Community Hall, 606 Church Street, Salem, Oregon. Private internment to be held at Willamette National Cemetery. Contributions may be made in Ken's name to any Veteran's organization.
