As a young girl she enjoyed swimming and earned a position on the Junior Olympics team. She held the Montana state record in the butterfly stroke. Kayte moved to San Diego where she met her husband, Michael. She was a stepmother to Michael’s 3 young children, Michael, Anthony and Shawna, later having her son, Daniel Kilfoil. She began a career as a hairstylist in the 1970’s at her parent’s salon, The Harwick House, in Long Beach, CA. In 1982 she moved to Independence, Oregon as a single mother with a dream of being a foster parent. This is where she found her Victorian home to make her dreams a reality. Kayte fostered countless girls throughout the years, creating lifelong bonds with the young women she helped raise. She was recognized nationally for her successful program. She was involved in her community, always striving to give back to people who needed it the most. Kayte touched many lives throughout her years with her contagious laugh and beautiful smile. She was a fun and gracious, loving person. She fought a long, brave battle with colon cancer. She passed away in her brother’s home in West Salem surrounded by loved ones on July 7, 2021.
