Kali Lou Roque, 1985 – 2023
Kali died on March 30th at her home in Salem, Oregon.
Kali was born in the town of Ellensburg, Washington on April 9, 1985. She was the fourth child of six, and the only daughter of Theresa Hethorn. In 1986 the Hethorn family would move to Monmouth, Oregon where she would grow up and become a stand-out student athlete for Central High School in volleyball and softball.
Kali graduated from Central in 2003. Kali earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Western Oregon University in 2008. She went on to earn her master's degree in social work from Portland State University in 2011.
Kali joined the Peace Corps shortly after finishing graduate school and served in the Dominican Republic from 2011 to 2014. There, she would meet her future husband Braulio Roque and the two were married at Sabana Grande de Boya on July 4, 2013.
Kali finished her time with the Peace Corps and moved back to Oregon to begin her career in social work with the Department of Human Services. After her time with DHS, she moved on to work at the Liberty House in Salem as a Child Forensic Interviewer. Her final job was with the Salem-Keizer School District as a Social Worker where she completed her Licensed Clinical Social Worker credentials.
Kali gave us an exemplary model on how to live a life. Her ability to forgive those who had caused her harm. Her ability to overcome when life got hard. Her passion for helping other victims of trauma. Her immense love that she poured into her family and community. Her infectious laugh and positive spirit filled our hearts and memories.
