John J Cunningham, 79, of Independence, passed away peacefully on April 10 after a short illness surrounded by his loving wife and children.
He was born to John C. Cunningham and Ethel Nichols on August 20, 1930 in Burneyville, Oklahoma, the eldest of 8 siblings.
They moved to Independence in 1946 where he worked at Independence Sand and Gravel. He then left there to serve in the Army in Korea from 1951 - 1953.
After he returned home he met his wife Clara Case. They were married for 57 years and had 3 children. He enjoyed fishing and hunting for many years. After retirement his enjoyment went to his yard work and going to Spirit Mountain Casino for slot gambling. He worked many years in construction for Davidson Masonary as a mason tender, retiring in 1991. He was a member of Local 320 for 57 years and a member of the American Legion and Amvets.
He is survived by his wife, Clara Cunningham, of Independence; children Janeen M. Johnson and husband Michael of Olathe, Kansas, John R. Cunningham and wife Trish of Independence; 7 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Bruce, and his parents.
A viewing/ visitation will be held Wednesday, April 14, from 2-6 pm at Farnstrom Mortuary. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, April 15 at 2 pm at Hilltop Cemetery. Farnstrom Mortuary is entrusted with arrangements.
