Jessie M. Gibbons of Independence, Oregon died October 16, 2005 at her home. Jessie was born February 22, 1915 in Alberta, Canada. Jessie grew up at Gull Lake and attended the local schools. As a young adult she worked in her parent's store which she carried groceries and supplies as well as being a post office and telephone exchange for the local community. Her father was a stone mason and she helped him build many stone fireplaces, pillars, etc. for the Gull Lake District. She loved to play softball and was a catcher on the local Gull Lake women's team. She also played ice hockey. She married Thomas Gibbons in 1937, and they farmed in Alberta until 1947 when they moved to Talmadge Road in Independence, Oregon where they still reside. Two children were born in Canada Maureen and Dennis and two children were born after moving to the United States, Marilyn and Brian. After coming to Oregon and raising her family Jessie completed her basic schooling and went on to receive a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education. She was working for the Payless Drug Store in Salem at time of retirement. Jessie was a member of the First Baptist Church in Independence and for many years was the church librarian. She liked to sew and quilt and with the ladies of the Church they sewed quilt's for others from Washington, Oregon California and Florida. When on the Mission Board she was instrumental in collecting blankets and used clean cloth and bought enough articles to fill big boxes to send to the Navaho Indians in Northern Arizona. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, sewing, quilting and mission work with the church. Contributions: American Cancer Society or Charity of Choice. Funeral Service will be 1:00 PM Friday Oct. 21st at Independence First Baptist Church. Private Vault Interment will be at Fir Crest Cemetery in Monmouth.
