Jean Marie Hargrave, born September 24, 1945 in Augusta Georgia to Hugh and Marie Hargrave. She was the eldest daughter. The family moved to Flippin and Mountain Home, Arkansas soon thereafter. She would be joined by her sister Carolyn in the coming year. The family moved to Yakima, Washington in 1946. Brother Mike would complete the family of 5.
Jean graduated from Highland High School in 1963. She would attend the local community college for a year before deciding to enter nursing school in Portland, Oregon. She earned her Registered Nurse pin from Emanuel School of Nursing in 1967. She would work at Dwyer Memorial (now known as Providence Milwaukie) for many years. There the bug of emergency room nursing caught her. The remainder of her days nursing would be spent in this adrenalin filled environment at St. Vincent’s Hospital and finally Meridian Park Hospital. As life went on, she would transition to insurance dispute resolution first in the private sector and eventually for the State of Oregon Workman’s Comp division. This is where she would decide to retire in 2006.
Work was one thing, but the pride and joy of Jean’s life was her family. The man, Joe Zink who would become her husband crashed a car into Jean’s roommate’s car in early 1968. One could say the rest was history as Joe and Jean were married on November 2, 1968 in Portland. They would settle for a few years in SE Portland before purchasing a parcel of land outside of Banks, Oregon.
Their daughter Michelle would add the title of mom in Dec 1973. Another daughter Lori would solidify the title by arriving less than a year later in Dec 1974. The last to call her mom, was a son, Ryan born in March 1978. The family would remain in Banks until 1984, when they would relocate to Tualatin, Oregon. After the kids grew up and left home, Joe and Jean decided to follow their dream of living on an airpark by purchasing a home in Independence, Oregon, where they continue to reside until Jesus called her to heaven on June, 13, 2020.
The next level of joy would occur when grandchildren started to arrive. Austin Makey in 2002, Ashlyn Makey in 2003, Zach Cooper in 2009 and Andrew Cooper in 2012. All 4 kids were the very definition of being the apple of her eye!
Gracious, loving and loyal are words that describe Jean in just about everything she did. She always had an extra plate ready to be set out should one of the kids bring home a friend with no notice. If someone needed a bed to rest on, then there was one waiting. As she raised her 3 kids, she ensured that they were provided for and protected to the best of her ability, even if that meant going against the school district when she disagreed at the location of the school bus stop. When Joe’s parents could no longer care for themselves, she helped to ensure the physical and medical needs were met. While she was not overtly social by nature, she showed such care to anyone she did encounter.
Jean is survived by her husband, Joe of Independence, Oregon, her daughters Michelle Cooper (husband Mike) of Tigard Oregon and Lori Zink of Poulsbo, WA, all 4 grandchildren, her mother (Marie Hargrave) of Yakima, sister Carolyn Henyan (husband Scott) of Yakima and brother Mike Hargrave (wife Christina) plus an extensive extended family. She was proceeded in death by her son, Ryan and father, Hugh. Fly free Jean. You were an amazing wife and mom/grandmother. We will miss you. Know that you are loved by all!
