Jane Elizabeth (Betty) Richards
January 21, 1921 - July 10, 2015
MONMOUTH - Betty was a long time resident of Monmouth and the surrounding area, she died Friday morning, July 10th, at Windsor Health and Rehab in Salem Oregon. Betty was born on January 21, 1921 to Robert and Margaret Buckley-Jones in Gaerwen Anglesey North Wales. She had one sister (Gwen) and two brothers (Jack and Gareth) who remained in North Wales. When she was in grammar school Queen Elizabeth, who was a princess at the time, came to her school and she was introduced. Later, after school she was a nurse in WWII and on more than one occasion had a bomb go off at one end of the block while she was at the other. After the war, in January of 1948, she moved to Oregon with her young son Terry to start a new life. She almost immediately met Kenneth Richards, they fell in love and the two married on May 22, 1948. They moved to Pedee where Ken farmed and Betty worked at Dallas Hospital. They had three children from this marriage: Ronald, Garry, and Margaret. In 1964 they moved to Monmouth where ken had begun a new career building houses and Betty became a custom decorator for those houses. She was such an excellent decorator that Ethan Allen of Portland offered her a job to head their decorating department; a job which she turned down to remain in business with her husband. Betty loved her family and was a wonderful mother, she loved God and in her later years loved people reading her the Bible, she also loved shopping for clothes or flowers with her family, she loved socializing with people, loved working as both a nurse and home decorator, and loved traveling the United States with her husband and children. As a mom and as a friend you couldn't have asked for anyone better. She was the most wonderful woman I've ever known. She loved and cared for her family from her heart and she will be greatly missed. She had five children, fourteen grandchildren, and twenty-three great- grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. She is survived by her sons Terry Richards and Ronald Richards and her Daughter Margaret Richards. She was preceded in death by her former husband Kenneth Richards and her son, Garry Richards. Her Memorial Service will be held Friday, July 17, 2015, 1:30 pm at Christ Church, 412 Clay Street W, Monmouth, OR. Farnstrom Mortuary is handling arrangements.
