James George DeForest passed away June 14, 2018, at the age of 79. He was born February 23, 1939, in Independence, Oregon, where he lived his entire life. He was the third of four children born to Orlow James and Mary Agnes (Smith) DeForest. After graduating from Central High School in Independence, he worked locally in a metal fabrication business. On November 25, 1960, he married Marlene Cox of Albany, Oregon. They had three children. Upon completing training at Camp Withycombe in Clackamas, Oregon, James began his career with the City of Independence Police Department in December 1965. After 25 years, he retired while reaching a position of Assistant Chief, in addition to serving an extended period as Acting Chief. James finished his working years as a security officer for Salem Hospital.James, or “Jim”, was a recreational hunter of deer, elk and game birds. He was a devout fisherman, seeking salmon/steelhead on the coastal rivers, and fly-fishing for trout in Central Oregon. At home, tending his annual vegetable garden was his go-to hobby. Always hungry for conversation and story-telling, Jim spent many hours with close friends at the Albany Trap Club. Trap shooting became his favorite sport in later years. Watching Mariners baseball was an avid pastime for Jim. He never met a stray cat he didn’t know and always made room for one or two at his home.Jim is survived by his wife, Marlene, and his three children: Robin of Independence, Derek of Salem, and Lon of Happy Valley, Oregon. He has six grandchildren, including Drew, Rachael, Halle, Madeline, Lileigh, and Tofer. He is survived by all siblings: Mary Eaton, Paradise, CA; Orla Jean Shroeder, Independence; and Virginia Park, Anaheim, CA.Memorial service will be held at the First Baptist Church of Independence on Wednesday, June 27, at 2 pm. The Church is located at 1505 Monmouth Street, Independence, Oregon.
