Helen Marie Glodt
August 27, 1916 - February 20, 2016
Helen Murphy Glodt, 99, died February 20 in Salem, OR. She was the Great Grand-daughter of pioneer Rev. John E Murphy who gave the land for WOU and wife of Salem restauranteur John T Glodt. She was one of a group of Salem ladies who starred in the 60's Bisquick commercial that ran for several years on TV nationwide. She was well-known for her apple dumplings, cakes and flowers. She graduated in 1937 from OR Normal (WOU) and taught in Rock Creek and Kinton. She and her husband owned and operated restaurants in Gresham, Hillsboro, Prineville, Seaside, La Grande, Keizer and Salem. J's Caf in Monmouth and Roberts Crossing in Salem are still in the family. Member of Jason Lee Methodist, Zenith, ABWA, and longtime Salem bowling leagues. She loved gardening, traveling and handwork.
She leaves children Barbara Williams, James and John Glodt. Grandchildren Ted, Christopher, Robbie, Jonni and Jeff Glodt, Jamie Hildebrand, Alana Thurston, Mary Flett, and Linda Tedford and 14 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at Jason Lee Methodist Church on Thursday, February 25, 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Willson House, Polk County Museum or Jason Lee Methodist Church.
