Helen Crow Livingston
December 6, 1921 - January 3, 2013
Salem - Helen Livingston, 91, passed away January 3, 2013 following a brief illness.
Helen was born in Fredericktown Missouri to Clarence Robert Crow and Florence Patton Crow. She was the youngest of six children. When Helen was ten she was baptized at the Fredericktown Christian Church. Later that same year her family moved to Potosi Missouri where her father ran the family lumber company.
Helen graduated from Potosi High School. She then completed a two year business program in Chillicothe Missouri. Following her graduation from the business school she worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority in Chattanooga, Tennessee. An interesting event she liked to talk about during that time was taking a vacation to Havana, Cuba.
When Helen's mother died unexpectedly she returned to Potosi, Missouri to take care of the family. During this time she met her former High School classmate Robert Livingston who had just returned to Potosi after serving in Army Air Corp in World War Two and they started dating. They were married in 1947. Helen and Robert were married for sixty years.
While living in New York City when her husband was attending Columbia University, Helen worked as an Administrative Assistant for an Education research project made up of all the Ivy League Presidents. Over the two years she worked there she became close friends with the presidents of Harvard and Columbia University.
Helen and Robert moved to Monmouth, Oregon in 1951. Helen lived in Monmouth for fifty years until she moved to Capital Manor in Salem, Oregon.
Helen was very active in supporting the city of Monmouth. She served on the Monmouth Library Board and the Monmouth Election Board for many years. She was a Brownie Leader. She went door to door raising money for the American Heart Association each year during their annual fund raising drive. She was active in the Campus Elementary School PTA. She was active in the OCE Faculty Women's Group. She was a member of Monmouth dial-a-care which called to make daily checks on elderly community members. She was a long time member of Monmouth's Social Hour Club. Helen's family had a long history of supporting the Salvation Army.
Upon their retirement Helen and Robert traveled extensively; including every March to Arizona to attend Spring Training.
Helen Livingston was admired by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. She was loved by her husband, children, children's spouses, grandchildren, and her caregivers at Capital Manor.
She is survived by her daughter Sally Peyree (Tom) of Independence, her son Jim (Ging) of Monmouth, her son Don of Happy Valley, and her daughter Jane Myatt (Mike) of Newberg. She had five grandchildren: Rob Peyree, Scott Peyree, Daniel Myatt, Amanda Myatt, and Ann Livingston. Helen had seven great grandchildren: Ethan Peyree, Luke Peyree, Tyler Peyree, Jenna Peyree, Samantha Peyree, Joshua Myatt and Beau Walker.
A memorial service is planned for Saturday, January 12, 12 p.m. at Monmouth Christian Church, 959 Church Street W. Interment will be at Fir Crest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Salvation Army. Farnstrom Mortuary is handling final arrangements, FarnstromMortuary.com.
