Guy Harlan Rooth, of Monmouth, passed away after a long and valiant fight against heart disease and diabetes. He was 75.
Guy was born in Concord, New Hampshire, to Irene and Fritiof Rooth. He was proud of his Swedish heritage including the language, culture and food. As a boy growing up he loved hunting and fishing and developed an enduring fascination with nature and the scientific world.
In 1959 Guy married the love of his life Catherine Logan and they began a lifetime of joy and fun that lasted for nearly 52 years. He took great delight in his children, Jennifer and Greg, and was a father who was generous with his love, humor and time.
Guy graduated from the University of New Hampshire and from Lehigh University with degrees in Geology. He earned his Ph.D. from Oregon State University in Geology and Paleontology. His dissertation shed new light on the formation of the geologic structures of the southern Oregon coast near Coos Bay. At one time he also was an advisor to the Smithsonian Institution on the development of elementary science programs. Prior to the eruption of Mt. St. Helens, he wrote a series of articles for the Statesman Journal and was thrilled to be able to ride in a small airplane with an SJ photographer during that event.
Guy was a Professor of Geology and Oceanography at Western Oregon University for 32 years. He enjoyed sharing his excitement about these subjects with his students and felt he had the best job in the world to be able to work with young people preparing for their futures. He especially loved his classes that dealt with teaching elementary education students how to excite young minds about science. His students and family will always remember the multitude of field trips he led to all parts of Oregon. Guy left a significant collection of fossils of Oregon to the University.
Guy is survived by his wife, Cathi, daughter Jennifer, son Gregory, daughter- in- law Barbra, grandchildren Maddi, Logan and Winston, and sister Lillian.
Celebration of Life open house will be 1-4pm Saturday, May 14th at the Rooth residence in Monmouth.
