Gerardo "Jay" Zarate passed away on May 31st, 2013 from heart failure. Jay was born in Robstown, Texas on May 20th, 1954 to Jesus and Virginia Zarate. His family migrated to Oregon settling in Independence. He graduated in 1973 from Central High School and Oregon College of Education in 1978, both having inducted him into their Hall of Fame for football. Jay started his teaching and coaching career in Burns, Oregon. His career continued to Hermiston and Madras where he retired in 2001.
He married his "Shugar" Jan (Jones) on March 29th, 1980. They raised three wonderful children: Jesus, Gerardo II (Jason), and Elysia. Jay was preceded in death by his father Jesus, mother Virginia, and sister Victoria. Surviving family includes his wife and children; brother Manuel of Eugene; sisters Guadalupe Cedillo of Robstown, TX; Piedad Garcia and Maria Zarate, both of Independence.
Having been a recipient himself, Jay has now become a donor enhancing the lives of many. The family asks in lieu of flowers, that you please consider the gift of becoming an anatomical donor.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday June 8th at 11 am at St Patrick Catholic Church in Independence.
