Freda M. Butterfield Kunard Oct. 30, 1918 - June 13, 2007 Freda M. Kunard of Independence died peacefully on June 13, 2007, on what would have been her 39th wedding anniversary. She died at the Evergreen Rehabilitation and Nursing Home in Independence, OR. She was 88 and died from complications of a stroke she had suffered in July 2006. Freda was born in Lost River, Idaho to Charles Leonard and Marian Sollenberger Lowe. She was raised in Blackfoot, Idaho and attended Albin Normal Teacher's College, Albin, Idaho. Freda graduated from Idaho State University in Pocatello, Idaho with a degree in elementary education. She married Roy Butterfield of Shoshone, Idaho, on October 17, 1940. Roy was a welder and structural steel worker. They lived in several cities throughout the Pacific Northwest where Freda taught school in many of those cities. Roy died in 1965, after his death Freda taught school for two years in Guam. On June 13, 1968, she married Lloyd D. Kunard, Sr. of Idaho Falls, Idaho. Lloyd was in retail sales. They returned to Guam where Freda taught another year before returning to Burley, Idaho to continue her teaching career. After retiring in 1986, Freda and Lloyd moved to Independence, OR. to be closer to her family. Freda lost the "love of her life" when Lloyd died on March 30, 2000. After Lloyd's death she spent her time with her son Len and daughter-in-law Sharon and grandson James; until she met her friend and companion Robert Langager of Independence, OR. Freda was active in the Independence/Monmouth Senior Center's and delivered meals on wheels with Lloyd for several years. Freda enjoyed crocheting, Swedish weaving, traveling and gardening. She is survived by her sons, Len Butterfield and wife Sharon of Corvallis, OR., Donald Butterfield and wife Josephine of Albany, OR., stepchildren Patricia Kunard Kishiyama and husband Victor, Suzette Kunard of Idaho Falls, Idaho, Lloyd Dale Kunard, Jr. of Lexington, KY, and Luana Kunard of Lakewood, CO., seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, a brother W. Charles Lowe and wife Dolores of Blackfoot, Idaho. A sister Elena Marshall, a stepson Dell preceded her in death. The family extends their appreciation and thanks to the staff of Evergreen Rehabilitation and Nursing Home in Independence and the Odyssey Hospice of Beverton, OR., for their help and kindness during Freda's extended illness. At her request there will be no service.
