Elizabeth Ada Valentine Sutliff April 14, 1912 ~ December 2, 2007 Elizabeth Ada Valentine Sutliff of Independence, Oregon passed away December 2, 2007. Elizabeth was born in San Jose, CA on April 14, 1912 to Ada and Harvey Valentine, the oldest of four children. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Cal Sutliff and a brother -Lloyd Valentine of Bremerton, WA and sister Ruth Troh of Gresham, Oregon. Elizabeth is survived by one brother Elwin Valentine of Edmonds, WA., two sons Albert Rasmussen of Tacoma, WA , Wayne Rasmussen of Seattle, WA, and a niece Lorraine Gabel of Independence. In the mid 30"s Elizabeth owned a restaurant called Betty's in Monterey, Ca. where she cooked, waited on tables and sold fresh fish. During WW11 she worked in a defense plant in Columbia, South Carolina. After the war she moved to San Francisco, Ca where she worked as a waitress and was active in the Order of Eastern Star. Upon the death of her sister Ruth Troh in a flying accident, Elizabeth moved to Portland and helped her brother-in-law Henry Troh manage Troh's Sky Port until the airport closed. She then worked at Bernard Beaverton, Oregon and Mears Electronics as a floor supervisor. Elizabeth then cared for her parents in Everett, WA. until their death. Upon moving to Independence, Oregon , Elizabeth worked at the Luckiamute private school as a book keeper, receptionist and reading tutor and then worked as a receptionist at the Independence- Monmouth YMCA. Just after her 94th birthday Elizabeth suffered a mild stroke and required a pacemaker implant. Then her infirmities forced Elizabeth out of her mobile home in Hazel Glen and her fiercely independent living style and to the Maplewood Care Home. Even though Elizabeth had a stroke she remained mentally alert and still worked the daily crossword puzzle until her death the evening of December 2, 2007. Graveside memorial service will be held at the Hilltop Cemetery on Tuesday, December 11, 2007 at 2:00 PM. On April 11, 2008 a Celebration of Elizabeth's Life will be held. Time and location have not been determined at this time. In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that donations be made to the Faith Lutheran Church and /or the Independence /Monmouth YMCA. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Farnstrom Mortuary.
