Genevieve Earline (Hawkins Sumner) Rose
Feb. 4, 1925 — Feb. 1, 2018
Earline Rose, 92, passed away at home in Monmouth, OR, on Feb. 1, 2018. She was born on Feb. 4, 1925, near Kell, Illinois, the only child of Claude Earl Hawkins and Neta Beatrice Tucker. She graduated in 1942 from Salem High School, Salem, Ill. Earline left Illinois in 1943 for Long Beach, California, where her fiancé, Morris Wayne Sumner, was stationed in the Army. They married in Alhambra on Dec. 25, 1943. Earline worked for an import company while Wayne was serving in the Aleutian Islands. They lived in Long Beach and then Lakewood, and had two children, Jill and Mark. In 1954 they moved to Barstow where Wayne managed a hardware store/lumber yard. Earline worked as a church secretary and an office manager at a local radio station. Wayne passed away in 1962. Earline married Donald Arley Rose on Aug. 23, 1963, and the family moved to Alta Loma. Don worked for a local newspaper and began a career in education, and Earline worked as a secretary in the counseling office at a local high school. In 1971 they moved to Blue Jay near Lake Arrowhead. Earline worked clerical/secretarial positions at the high school, where Don was a high school vice-principal and later principal of the alternative high school. Earline became a great hostess as they often entertained family, friends, and co-workers. She retired from Rim of the World School District in 1985. After Don's retirement, they spent the summer of 1989 in Winchester Bay, OR, where Don did commercial fishing. Shortly before they were to return home, Don suffered a stroke which left him paralyzed on one side. They lived with Jill in Monmouth, OR, while he was in rehab. Living in their California home would no longer be possible, so they made their new home in Coos Bay, OR, in 1991. Don passed away in 1994, and Earline remained in Coos Bay until moving to Brookdale Senior Living in Monmouth in 2014. Earline was a Christian since childhood, and was always an active member of a local congregation. She served many ways including as church secretary, singing in the choir, leader of a church women's fellowship, on a women's ministry board, and on a missions committee. She attended Bible studies, women's retreats, senior potlucks, and women's bunco nights. In Oregon she attended Hauser Community Church and later Shoreline Community Church. In Monmouth she attended Monmouth Christian Church when able. She was a member of Friends of the Coos Bay Library, and a faithful volunteer at their monthly book sales. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary Military Order of the Purple Heart, where she served many years as treasurer at both the local and state level. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She volunteered at Red Cross blood drives and the SMART Reading program. Earline was an avid reader, often reading a book a day. In Coos Bay she enjoyed Sunday lunches with church ladies, dinners out with friends, going to Christmas bazaars, and attending local concerts and theatrical productions. She enjoyed traveling, and she and Don spent many days and weeks traveling by car, with trailer, or in a motorhome. Most important to her were her faith, family, and friends. She was a loving and supportive mother, was constantly giving of herself serving others, and had a great smile and friendly disposition. She was loved by many and will be greatly missed. Earline is survived by her daughter, Jill Johnson, Monmouth, OR, son Mark Sumner(Diane), Santa Clarita, CA, step-daughter Lori Gray (Michael), Ontario, CA; grandchildren Jason (Sandi) and Dan Johnson, Michael and Chris Sumner, Michelle Harkness (Tim), step-grandchildren Lauren, Cole, Michael, Thomas, and Douglas Gray; great-grandchildren Mackenzie, Hunter, Scott, and Luke Johnson, Andrew, Mia, and Anthony Harkness, step-great-grandchildren Cadence and Jade Barstad, and Tyla Lovegrove.
