Dorothy Anne (Homan) Jones May 3, 1919 - January 8, 2019
Dorothy Anne (Homan) Jones died at a Salem care home January 8, 2019 at the age of 99 years, 8 months and 5 days.
Dorothy was born to her mother, Edith Dora (Smith) Turner and father, Edgar Turner (deceased from Spanish flu shortly before her birth), on May 3, 1919, in Seattle, WA. Her widowed mother, Edith, married Harvey Homan, and the family lived at Raymond, WA, before moving to Seaside, Bend, and finally Bay City, in OR, where Dorothy graduated from high school as salutatorian.
She attended Oregon Normal School in Monmouth, and after graduation taught school one year at Hebo. She then married Charles (Bud) Hamilton Jones in 1940, living together until his death in 2007.
During their 67 years of marriage, Dorothy and Bud raised three daughters, and taught school together at the following places in Oregon: Mist, Mitchell, Kinzua, Independence, Dever, Frenchglen, Sodhouse on the Malheur Wildlife Refuge in Harney County, Long Creek and Greenwood School near Independence.
Survivors include three daughters, Charlene Anne Kizer of Albany, Gayle Diane Griffith of Sweet Home, and Andrea Elaine Melendy of Independence, nine grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, husband Charles (Bud) Jones, and two sisters, Irene Sause of Coos Bay, and Mary Lou Hill of Centralia, Washington.
Dorothy always had a love of children, and enjoyed seeing them succeed in life. She and her husband also for several years tutored and cared for seven foster children along with their own three daughters. She also enjoyed playing the organ, sewing, working in her yard, growing a garden and flowers.
At her request no funeral will be held, but a family Celebration of Life will be planned at a later date. Farnstrom Mortuary, Independence, is in charge of arrangements. Please share your memories and condolences through her memorial website.
