Dorothy Genevieve Gibbons

MONMOUTH - Dorothy Gibbons passed away Nov. 27 peacefully at home. She was 89.

She was born Aug. 10, 1922 in Blackfalds, Alberta, Canada, to Chester and Catherine Miller. She was the second oldest of 11 children. After graduating from high school in Blackfalds, she attended Edmonton Normal School to pursue a teaching degree. She later taught at several rural, one-room schools in Alberta, including Spruceville and Angus Ridge schools.

Dorothy Miller married Donald Gibbons on June 13, 1944 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Red Deer, Alberta. In 1947, they moved to the Willamette Valley. Together, they raised eight children, one son and seven daughters. Dorothy worked as a library aide at Independence and Henry Hill elementary schools before retiring in 1978.

She was a longtime parish member at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Independence. She also was a member of the church's Altar Society and spent many hours volunteering with various church programs. Dorothy was a member of the Parker Women's Club and also served as a 4H and Girls Scouts leader. Before moving to Oregon, she was involved in Girls Guides and the Women's Institute in Blackfalds, Alberta.

Dorothy enjoyed crocheting, knitting, gardening, reading and traveling. She and Donald began spending winters in Arizona after they retired. They spent more than 25 years there, first in Yuma and then Ajo.

She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Donald D., son David (Sharon) Gibbons and daughters Linda Mans, Mildred Pickering, Catherine (Patrick) Woodward, Elaine (Gary) Woodward, Martha (Steven) Russell, Clare (Ron) Mangis, 21 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by daughter Anita McIntosh and granddaughter Anjuli Woodward.

The family would like to thank Willamette Valley Hospice for its assistance during Dorothy's final days.

A funeral mass is scheduled for 2 p.m., Saturday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Independence, 1275 E St. A reception will follow the funeral mass. Arrangements are being handled by Farnstrom Mortuary.
