Doris Joy VanLaningham
May 15, 1928 - August 10, 2014
Doris Joy VanLaningham went to be with our Heavenly Father on August 10, 2014, surrounded by her husband, son and daughter-in-law, daughter and son-in-law and granddaughter at home. Born Doris Joy Lawrence in Coleman, Oklahoma May 15, 1928 to Stewart and Pearl (Needham) Lawrence. She is the oldest of three sisters, June Wiley (deceased) and Sybil Durant. The family moved to Exeter, California in 1943. Joy married Orville VanLaningham in 1944. She lived in Exeter, Farmersville and Woodlake, California. She packed fruit and worked as a caregiver at Sequoia Home for the elderly before retiring and moving to Independence, Oregon in 1991. Joy helped run the family roping arena in California and Oregon where many locals learned to rope. In Oregon she helped Orville every year bringing in the hay for their cattle and horses. Joy also loved her huge garden, canning and sharing her produce.
Joy wrote in her diary the most important lessons she learned in life were to be "content with what I have until I can do better" and "Try to be a happy person." She certainly was successful; she was loved by all she met for her loving, sweet and giving personality. Joy once wrote "I'm afraid I don't have any talents." We all knew of Joy's many talents: her love of gardening, her giving personality, canning, crocheting, cooking, love of flowers, busy hands are all her talents that are lovingly remembered and shared by her children and grandchildren. Joy left a loving legacy for us all to embrace.
Joy is survived by her husband, Orville; son, Stewart Lee (Paige) VanLaningham; daughter, Sharon Kay (Arlin) Bidwell. One son, Lanny Zane VanLaningham predeceased her. Joy is also survived by eight grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.
Our family would like to thank Willamette Valley Hospice for their generous helping hands. We would also request, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Willamette Valley Hospice, 1015 3rd St. NW, Salem, OR 97304.
A graveside service will be held Thursday, August 14, 1 pm at Hilltop Cemetery, Independence. Farnstrom Mortuary is handling arrangements. Memories and condolences at FarnstromMortuary.com.
