David Emmet Cooper

MONMOUTH - David Cooper died peacefully on August 16, 2012 with his wife and two sons at his bedside. David was born on June 14, 1932 to Emmet & Alma Cooper in Clintonville, Wisconsin. He graduated from Clintonville High School, worked for a year at the 4-Wheel Drive Factory, and then enlisted in the U.S. Navy for four years. After discharge he enrolled in the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and pursued a degree in Economics (1961) while working full-time at the Kimberly Clark Corporation. He continued his education at the University of Iowa and earned an M.A. degree in Economics in 1965. While at the U. of I. he was an Instructor and a Research Assistant for the Center for Labor and Management. For three years he was an Assistant Professor at the Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant Iowa, where he served as President of the Economic Society. He was one of eight professors from colleges and universities throughout the U.S. invited to represent their respective schools in the African Curriculum Development Project, spending eight weeks in East Africa. He then worked for a year at the Ampex Corporation in Elk Grove Village, Illinois as Manager of Training and Development. Having truly enjoyed his time in East Africa, he jumped at the chance to serve as Director of Personnel, Planning and Development for Kaiser Technical Services in Ghana, West Africa, where he and his family lived for four years. In 1975 to 1977 he worked as a Personnel Manager for Weyerhaeuser Company in Hong Kong, during which time he traveled extensively in the Far East. He continued working for Weyerhaeuser in various positions for 11 years, after which he worked as a registered Financial Consultant until he retired in 1998.
David was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Independence, OR. He was a member of the Elk's Club in Eugene for about 20 years, the American Economic Society, and more recently was a member of the Emeritus Society in Monmouth, OR. David enjoyed playing golf and won two "hole-in-one" trophies. He also belonged to a bowling team representing Weyerhaeuser for a number of years. He loved fly fishing and built his own fly rods. He enjoyed playing cards and working on his computer. But most of all, he loved to travel.
David met his wife, Constance (Connie) on a blind date in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. They were married on June 21, 1958 in Loyal, Wisconsin. They raised three sons, James, Steven and Thomas. David was preceded in death by his son James; his brothers John and Daniel; and by his sister, Nancy. He is survived by his wife, Connie; sons Steven & Thomas; sister Judy Gosse of Brevard, NC; and numerous nieces & nephews.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 25, 12:45 pm at St. Patrick Church, 1275 E Street, Independence. Arrangements by Farnstrom Mortuary.
