Clarence Earl Kern, 94, a resident of Independence, passed away at home on Sunday, April 25, 2010.
He was born on March 22, 1916, in Waterloo, Iowa, the youngest of three children to Earl and Amelia (Bender) Kern.
Clarence was raised in Waterloo, and graduated high school in Jessup, Iowa. He worked as a meat packer in Waterloo. He briefly moved to California, then moved back to Iowa. He married Ferne Howard in 1939. Clarence moved to Independence, and worked as a pattern maker for Franklin Equipment.
Clarence was involved in the Elks Lodge # 1950 in Independence for 10 years. He also served as a Scoutmaster for 8 years for the Boy Scouts, being involved in Scouting for 10 years. He was also a city councilman for the city of Independence in the early 1950's in charge of parks and recreation. He was a member of the Monmouth Christian church, and enjoyed fishing, hunting, and wood carving.
Clarence is survived by his children Deanna Kern of Wilsonville, Dennis Kern and his wife Marilyn of Albany, David Kern of Roseburg; sister Glapha Mussett of Mancado, Minnesota; five grandchildren, one great grandchild, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Ferne, and sister Edna Phillips.
A Celebration of Life was held on April 29, at Monmouth Christian Church, with Pastor Dale Halligan officiating. Private cremation was held at Farnstrom Cremation Center, with Farnstrom Mortuary in care of arrangements. Online condolences may be sent to
