Charlotte Mae Walker

January 15, 1924 - January 23, 2014

The Monmouth community lost a valuable member on January 23, 2014 when Charlotte Walker, age 90, peacefully passed away from pneumonia.

Charlotte, born in Wagner, South Dakota to Earl Warren Doty and Edith (Gibson) Doty, was the fifth of six children. The family moved to Corvallis, Oregon, when she was 12. She graduated from Corvallis High School and married Kenneth, her husband of 72 years, in 1941. After World War II, they moved to Tacoma, Washington where Kenneth taught biology at the College of Puget Sound. Charlotte studied Spanish at CPS and in turn taught adult Spanish classes for many years. In 1957, they moved to Monmouth where Kenneth taught biology at OCE for 28 years until retirement.

Charlotte lived in Monmouth for 56 years, as a faculty wife, a member of Monmouth Civic Club and charter member of Monmouth Garden Club. She did a survey in the 1960's of the migrants settling in the area which led to the formation of the Valley Migrant League. She was involved in the M-I Community Action program and organized the local American Field Service student exchange program. Charlotte especially enjoyed traveling with the family. She and Kenneth spent wonderful summers boating and winters "snow-birding" in Arizona.

She is survived by her husband, Kenneth Walker, daughters, Charline Durchanek and Virginia Hernandez, eight grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and older sister, Lucile Johnson. Charlotte was preceded in death by two sons, Roger and Ronald Walker, one grandson, her parents and four brothers.

To celebrate the life of Charlotte Walker, friends and family are invited to a memorial service on Saturday, February 8, 2014, 2:00PM, at Christ's Church, 412 Clay St. W, Monmouth, Oregon. Contributions in Charlotte's name may be made to: Dr. Kenneth M. Walker Biology Endowment, Western Oregon University; Monmouth Garden Club; Christ's Church, Monmouth.
