Casper F. (Bud) Paulson, Jr.
November 3, 1928-April 29, 2012

Bud Paulson passed away on April 29, 2012, at the age of 83 years, after a long struggle with Multiple Myeloma and renal failure. He was born November 3, 1928, to Casper F. and Anne E. (Moe) Paulson in Portland, Oregon. He lived as a child in Portland and later Canby, Oregon. He was always thankful that he had been raised in a very loving, if financially challenged, family.

As a child, he was diagnosed with rheumatic fever and the doctor ordered months of bed rest during which he received home tutoring. He longed to play outside with the other children and developed a life long interest in radio including short wave.

He began Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois, when he was 16 years old and graduated in four years in 1949, after working full time 8-hour night shifts in the John Deere Foundry plus working in the school cafeteria at meal times to earn the money to put himself through school. He completed a Master of Arts in Teaching at Reed College in Portland in 1961. While there he had organized an intramural wrestling program. That was always the sport in which he was most interested. In the summer of 1971 through the University of Oregon, he fulfilled requirements for his Doctor of Education degree with his dissertation entitled Research on Programed Dental Instruction, after having assisted in writing the 7-volume text for beginning dental anatomy.

His professional work experience included ten years of teaching upper elementary grades (6, 7, 8) in the Portland Public Schools where he was a valued and appreciated teacher. In August of 1962, Bud was invited to join Teaching Research Division of the State System of Higher Education on the Oregon College of Education campus. He worked in instructional development and educational evaluation and retired in 1985. Later he had his happiest experiences volunteering at Henry Hill Elementary School working with second graders in their reading program.

Bud married Marilyn Nelson on August 1, 1953, at First Immanuel Lutheran Church in Portland, Oregon. They lived in Portland for one year before moving to Evanston, Illinois, so he could work at The Evanston Hospital to complete his military obligation as a conscientious objector and then returned to work in Portland until he began the work at Teaching Research and moved to Independence. They have lived in the same house for almost 50 years and raised their children Erik, Karl and Sonja there. That house has served as the location for many holidays by the extended family and many friends.

Bud was born into a family with historic ties to the Lutheran church. Both of his grandfathers started Lutheran congregations by holding church services in their living rooms, one in Tacoma, Washington, and the other in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Bud served in many capacities in whatever congregation to which he belonged. He has served on the church councils, taught Sunday School, ushered, and been a communion assistant. Of special note is his service on the Oregon Synod Planning Committee when the church went through a reorganization. He also was on the committee that researched and evaluated church organs before the lovely tracker organ was decided on for St. Mark Lutheran Church in Salem. Many times he and Marilyn served as delegates to the annual Oregon Synod Convention.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years Marilyn and children Erik (Julie) Paulson of Salem, Karl (Mary) Paulson of Salem, and Sonja (Gary) Compton of Brownsville, Oregon. Grandchildren are Bailey Compton, Elliot Paulson and Jazmine Compton. His surviving brothers are John (Donna) Paulson of Eugene and James (Frankie) Paulson of Portland. Also surviving is sister-in-law Carol (Greg) Sporseen of Kirkland, Washington. Nieces include Kristin Landon, Ashley Steffl, Elke Betonte and Petra Sporseen. Nephews are Hans Tonjes, Tim Paulson, Nick Paulson, Aaron Sporseen, and Kjell Sporseen. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Margaret Thea Tonjes and brother-in-law Henry Tonjes.

Services will be on May 12th, 2012, at 1 p.m. at St. Mark Lutheran Church, 790 Marion Street NE, Salem, Oregon.
