Carrol Dean "Mike" Twenge

March 11, 1929 — November 7, 2014

MONMOUTH - Carrol Dean "Mike" Twenge, 85 of Monmouth, died Friday, November 7, 2014. Mike was born March 11, 1929 in Herman, Minnesota and was the second of five siblings born to Loella Besler and Ole Twenge. The Twenge family lived briefly in Barnesville, Minnesota and Roundup, Montana then eventually settled in Newberg, Oregon in 1936.

Mike graduated from Newberg High School in 1947 and lettered in football, basketball and baseball. His senior year he was selected as a pitcher for the Portland Metro All-Star Baseball Team. As a teenager, his summer job was working in the Portland shipyards helping build WW II liberty ships.

On November 4, 1950 Mike married Jeanne Marie Reiser in Newberg. They recently celebrated 64 years of marriage.

Mike was drafted into the Army in September 1950 serving in Kaiserslautern, Germany. While in Germany he played football for the base team, the Rhine Rhinos. Mike was promoted to Master Sergeant and was honorably discharged in 1952.

After serving in the Army, Mike took night classes in Portland and started work as an Accountant for Spaulding Pulp and Paper in Newberg. In 1959 Mike began work for Boise Cascade in Independence, Oregon where he enjoyed a long career in the wood products industry and advanced steadily, eventually being promoted to Western Oregon Regional Manager. He retired from Boise Cascade in 1976.

Mike enjoyed semi-retirement working as a Tax Consultant in the winter when he wasn't fishing. In 1974 Mike and Jeanne bought a second home ("the Cabin") on the tidewater of the Alsea River. Fishing was one of his passions, he looked forward to the salmon run every fall. For over 40 years the cabin has been a place for family gatherings and tales of big fish caught and lost.

Mike is survived by his wife Jeanne; sons Michael (Debbie) of McMinnville, Dennis (Dawn) of Monmouth, and David (Carmen) of Corvallis; five grandchildren and one great grandchild; brother Jack Twenge, and sisters Lois Ann Lackey and Mary Sue Mueller. Mike's death was preceded by brother Richard Twenge, parents Ole and Loella.

A Celebration of Life will be held for Mike on November 22, 2014 starting at 1:00 p.m. at the Monmouth Senior Center located at 180 Warren Street S in Monmouth. All friends and family are invited.
