MONMOUTH - Betty Lorence, 90, of Monmouth, Oregon, passed away June 22. She was born March 12, 1924 to Harold and Esther Ploense in Portland, Oregon. Betty graduated from Franklin High School in 1942, and Oregon State University in 1947, with a degree in business. She was a member of Alpha Chi Omega Sorority.
She married Robert (Bob) Lorence in June 1948. Betty was a wonderful homemaker, supportive farm wife and mother, as well as a social worker in Polk and Marion Counties. She was active in The Monmouth Social Club, several bridge clubs, PEO, and Christ Church. Her hobbies included reading, gardening, golfing, playing bridge and attending local cultural events. She loved to laugh with family and friends, cheer on her Oregon State Beavers, spend time at the beach, watch classic movies, and had fond memories of dancing to Big Band and swing music.
Her husband, Bob, preceded her in death in 2000. Survivors include her children, Tom Lorence of Damascus, OR, Dave Lorence of Bonney Lake, WA, and Mary Lorence of Eugene, OR, her brother Bill Ploense of Portland, 7 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held July 5, 2014, at 2 pm at Christ Church, 412 Clay Street West, in Monmouth. Private inurnment will be at Fir Crest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Monmouth Senior Center, 180 Warren St. S, Monmouth OR 97361. Arrangements are by Farnstrom Mortuary, Independence, OR.
