Barbara Ann Ruef Smith of Independence, Oregon passed away February 25, 2011 at the age of 89. Born in Independence to Earl and Marie Ruef, descendants of early pioneers of Independence. Graduated from Independence High School and OCE. Taught and coached at Grants Pass High School. After WWII ended married Dean Smith and went into family grocery business. Sold the business and worked as a bookkeeper for the market place until retirement. Barbara was a top tennis player in the northwest at OCE.
Survivors included her sons Larry Smith of Independence and Stephen Smith of Arizona. Granddaughter Deena Fitts of Monmouth, grandson; Todd Smith of Independence, 1 great granddaughter; Bethani Smith of Salem and 1 great great grandson; Tristan Smith of Salem.
No Services will be held. Private interment will be at Hilltop Cemetery in Independence.
