Barbara Joan Locke
March 11, 1942 — February 27, 2021
Barbara Joan Locke, 78, maiden name Sahnow, of Springfield, Oregon, passed to glory on Saturday, February 27th, 2021 surrounded by family in her home. Her life was full of energy and excitement that she put into being a loving wife, mother, Grammy and friend.
Barbara grew up in Independence, Oregon where she graduated high school. She continued her education at Western Oregon University and graduated in 1964 with a teaching certificate. Barbara started a small private kindergarten in the Mohawk Valley in the 1960s. She then was hired by Marcola elementary school and was a well-loved second grade teacher until her retirement many decades later. Barbara was an active member of Immanuel Baptist Church of Springfield, Oregon and The Gideons International.
Barbara loved to travel, the Oregon coast being her absolute favorite destination. She traveled the globe on several occasions and even volunteered as a substitute teacher in Papua New Guinea at Ukarumpa International School for short periods of time. Barbera loved to wear and collect the color purple and was lovingly known by many as “The Purple Lady.”
Barbara is survived by her husband (Harold Locke) and her four children (Matthew, Kenneth, wife Debi, Melissa, husband David R., Jessica, husband David L.) and her grandchildren, (Shaniqua, James, Jordan, Malachi, Luke, Timothy, Micah, Mark, Naomi, Faith, Mariah, David, and Harrison) and her four brothers (James, Steve, Benjamin and Vernon) and her sister (Sandra) and a large community of friends and extended family around the world.
Barbara wished to have no service, but to be privately remembered by her friends. She will be laid to rest at Hilltop Cemetery in Independence Oregon.
“For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.” 2 Corinthians 1
