Alfred G. Smith
July 29, 1936 - August 31, 2015
Dallas - Our family's John Wayne lost his battle against bone cancer early Monday morning at Salem Hospital.
Al leaves behind his wife Juanita (Nita), three children daughter Denise Beach (Mike) of Homer, Alaska; son Rocky Smith of Salem, Oregon; daughter Bobbie Jo Benefiel (Fred) of Banks, Oregon; two sisters, Fern Gurwell of Arizona, Vera Wireman of Nevada, brother Joe Smith of Clatskanie, Oregon; three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
He was born July 29, 1936 in Lewistown, Montana, the son of Harold and Elise Smith, joining four other siblings.
Al served in the National Guard in high school. He graduated from Warrenton High School in 1955. In January, 1956 he signed up with the US Navy through December 1959. He served on the USS Charles H. Roan DD-853. These years with the Navy as a sonarman were quite an adventure. Traveling the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and visiting many foreign countries he might not have seen otherwise.
While home on leave in 1959 he met his future wife, Nita. Here began another adventure. He became a journeyman, later log scaler with the Columbia River Log Scaling and Grading Bureaus, until he retired. He also worked for Boise Cascard at Valsetz and Willamina, Oregon.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing , clam digging (which he did commercially while in high school to earn money). He loved all his family and liked gathering for large family events. He was a reader of any subject, which he retained and could tell you many things about history if you asked him.
We love you daddy and miss you, but you will always be in our hearts. At the request of deceased there will be no graveside services. His ashes will be taken to sea by his family at a later date. Farnstrom Mortuary is handling arrangements. Memories and condolences at FarnstromMortuary.com.
